Abstract
We investigated the in-vivo infectivity of anti-HCV (hepatitis C virus) seropositive blood products to estimate the risk of post-tranfusion hepatitis. One thousand fourty one units of blood were retrospectively tested for anti-HCV by first
generation
anti-HCV EIA and nine (0.86%) of them were seropositive. Nine recipients, who had been transfused blood products seropositive for anti-HCV, were followed-up and tested for the presence of anti-HCV and HCV RNA. We also investigated clinical
features
and
laboratory findings including alanine aminotransferase (ALT). Four recipients were followed-up for less than three months, and five recipients were followed up for more than 20months. We found two cases of HCV infection after transfusion; one had
acute
post-transfusion hepatitis and the other had anti-HCV seroconversion without clinical hepatitis.
